Report on the Riots.
Rec 28 DEC 08
At 9.30 a.m. on the 1st. instant (Sunday)
a number of men broke into No. 78, Ko Shing Street (in the Western District) and proceeded to remove the goods which 261 consisted of cases containing marine delicacies from Japan. Police were sent from No. 7 Station and arrested 22 men and recovered most of the property. At 2 p.m. a similar store at No. 80, Ko Shing Street was broken into. Police arrested 9 men and recovered part of the property. About 7.30 p.m. a number of men started wrecking the "ring and marble saloons" in the Western District. Extra Police were sent from Central District but the mob succeeded in entering and smashing up the contents of a dozen of these saloons. These *galoons" are shops where games with rings, marbles, &c. are played. The property in them was of small value, consisting of cheap articles given away as "prizes" in the games. Meanwhile (about 8 p.m.) a Chinese reported at Central that his shop in Kwai Wa Lane (Central District) was being attacked. The Chief Inspector at once took a party of Police to the spot and found the shop had been cleared out. It was a Chinese shop dealing in Japanese marine delicacies He left some Police there to prevent other similar shops being attacked. On his way back to station with the rest of the party they heard a noise of door beating from Hollywood Road. They doubled in the direction of the noise and found men breaking into No. 60 Lyndhurst Terrace. The ringleader was arrested and the crowd dispersed. This was at about 8.50 p.m. At the same time = "ring saloon" further down the street was entered and the contents thrown into the street. The Chief Inspector caught one man and took him to station and ordered out all available men with carbines, and told them off into pickets to patrol all the principal streets. Several more "ring saloons" in Des Voeux Road and one in Peel Street were attacked and about 40 arrests were made, and matters then became quiet. Several Police
